House in Luk Chau

Nestled on the rocky shoreline of Luk Chau on Lamma Island
The private residence harmonises contemporary architecture with the raw, natural beauty of Hong Kong’s outlying islands. Completed in 2023, the 350 sqm house emerges as a serene, light-filled sanctuary that celebrates its dramatic waterfront setting while respecting the island’s tranquil, low-density character.
The design draws inspiration from the site’s unique topography — a steep, vegetated hillside meeting the sea — and reinterprets the traditional “house by the water” typology through a clean, modern lens. The building is positioned to maximise panoramic sea views while minimising its footprint on the natural rock formation. A series of cantilevered volumes and terraces appear to float above the shoreline, creating a dialogue between solid and void, architecture and landscape.
The pure white cubic form contrasts deliberately with the lush green backdrop and textured granite boulders, establishing a sculptural presence that is both bold and respectful. Large glazed openings on the seaward façades dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, inviting the ever-changing light, reflections of the water, and cooling sea breezes deep into the living spaces.
